Singapore Math is a math curriculum developed in Singapore in the 1980’s. It has a definite focus on number sense and problem solving.
Its uniqueness comes with from the strategies that are used to help students develop a much deeper understanding of numbers than many of us have experienced in our own education.
What I have found is that many of the Singapore math strategies fall nicely with what we are doing. It has been my experience that I have used many of the strategies stressed in the Singapore curriculum, but it has never been with the intensity that my students have required.
Attached is a link to an article from Columbus, where it seems that many of the teachers have embraced this style of teaching.

Thanks for stating this Becky! Having only been to one Singapore training and looking at the research behind their success, I would really like to see FCS adopt the program at least in the primary grades. The power of Singapore Math is having children have a firm foundation in number sense and it has to start in Kindergarten. Having friends who teach in the Columbus School system, the buildings who have gone to Singapore Math have seen the greatest test score gains. The books are also very user friendly and are well worth the investment.
ReplyDeleteI think that the primary grade teachers will like these strategies a lot. It sounds like are GWM series uses many of the tools, (such as the base ten mats and similar manipulatives), but may not spend enough time developing the number sense aspect of mathematics. I also just think it is good math instruction for educators in general considering many of us were never taught that deep understanding of mathematics.
